Senior VoIP Engineer / Head of VoIP
Location: Seattle, WA. We're in the office 3 days a week (Tues-Thurs).
Type: Full-time
About Tin Can
Here at Tin Can, we're working to give kids the social independence we had growing up—without smartphones. We've built a remix of the classic home phone we had when we were young, but on a totally private network and with a bunch of added safety functionality (plus some fun surprise features in the pipeline).
We're building a bold, authentic, nostalgic, and kinda quirky brand that resonates with folks who want something simpler & better for their kids than the tech-infused lives we're currently living (and who have a sense of humor about it). As we gear up to launch our flagship device and scale to thousands of families, we're ready to bring on a VoIP engineering leader to own our voice infrastructure and make crystal-clear connections happen at scale.
The Role
We're looking for a Senior VoIP Engineer / Head of VoIP to take complete ownership of our voice infrastructure and lead the technical strategy that keeps families connected. This is both a strategic leadership role and a hands-on engineering position where you'll architect, scale, and optimize the VoIP systems that are literally the heart of what we do.
You'll be the go-to expert on all things voice—from Kamailio and Asterisk optimization to building bulletproof monitoring systems that catch issues before families ever notice them. This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic thinking, as you'll shape our infrastructure roadmap while also diving deep into complex technical challenges when critical issues arise.
Initially, you'll be primarily hands-on—architecting core systems, debugging complex issues, and building foundational infrastructure. As we scale and you grow the team, your focus will shift more toward strategic leadership while maintaining involvement in the most critical technical challenges.
This is a highly strategic role where you'll own capacity planning, expansion strategy, and technical roadmaps. You'll work closely with our hardware and IoT teams, and be the technical voice that gives leadership confidence to make bold commitments about what our platform can handle.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Technical Leadership:
- Own the complete VoIP technology strategy and roadmap with capacity planning for massive scale
- Build and lead a growing team of VoIP-focused engineers and stakeholders, fostering technical excellence and collaborative problem-solving
- Design and architect scalable VoIP infrastructure using platforms like Kamailio, Asterisk, and FreeSWITCH
- Develop comprehensive geographic expansion strategies for multi-region deployment and vertical scaling roadmaps for new voice services, ensuring scalability and stability across all growth scenarios
- Serve as the technical authority presenting infrastructure capabilities, security posture, and scalability roadmaps to the founding team and key stakeholders
Infrastructure & Operations:
- Build advanced load testing and capacity modeling tools that validate growth projections
- Design comprehensive monitoring/dashboarding/alerting solutions
- Ensure best-in-class security practices to build the most secure voice network families can trust
- Lead critical technical investigations when complex issues arise
- Develop sophisticated routing logic, load distribution, and failover systems
What We're Looking For
VoIP Expertise:
- Extensive experience architecting and scaling VoIP systems with platforms like Kamailio, Asterisk, FreeSWITCH
- Proven track record scaling voice services from thousands to millions of users
- Advanced knowledge of SIP, RTP, and VoIP security best practices
- Experience with monitoring platforms and building custom dashboards
Leadership & Communication:
- Strong cross-functional collaboration with hardware and IoT teams
- Track record of delivering on technical commitments to strategic partners
- Experience building and scaling voip engineering teams
Technical Foundation:
- Expert-level cloud infrastructure experience with platforms like AWS
- Experience with load testing and performance optimization for real-time communications
- Entrepreneurial mindset with experience in fast-paced startup environments
- Self-directed problem solver passionate about mission-driven work
Why Join Tin Can?
- Mission: We're on a quest to give kids a more analog childhood—one with real conversations, real connection, and way less screen time. No doomscrolling, data mining, or dopamine traps—just a simpler, better way for kids to stay in touch. This is a rare chance to build something that truly matters—reshaping the way kids connect in a world that desperately needs it.
- Scale & Impact: Build and lead the team that scales voice infrastructure to millions of users. You'll have complete autonomy to architect systems for massive scale and build technical organizations that can confidently commit to supporting explosive growth.
- Strategic Impact: Be the technical leader who gives our executive team confidence to pursue ambitious growth opportunities. Your infrastructure roadmaps will directly enable business expansion, geographic scaling, and new product launches that define Tin Can's future.
- Collaboration: Every business uses the phrase "team," but at Tin Can it means something special. There's just three of us, and we spend every day working hard to support each other professionally and personally. We're so stoked to extend that same support to the next member of our tight-knit group.
- Creative Freedom: Enjoy the freedom to propose bold infrastructure ideas and experiment with cutting-edge VoIP technologies without layers of red tape. We move at breakneck speed and trust our technical leaders to make the right calls.
If you're excited by the idea of owning voice infrastructure that connects thousands of families daily—building systems that are secure, scalable, and reliable enough that parents trust them with their kids' safety—we'd love to hear from you. Please reach out with your resume, examples of VoIP systems you've architected or scaled, and any relevant projects that showcase your technical leadership.
We can't wait to meet someone who's ready to take ownership of our voice infrastructure and help us scale authentic human connection.
Growth & Retention Lead

About Tin Can
Here at Tin Can, we're working to give kids the social independence we had growing up—without smartphones. We've built a remix of the classic home phone we had when we were young, but on a totally private network and with a bunch of added safety functionality (plus some fun surprise features in the pipeline).
We're building a bold, authentic, nostalgic, and kinda quirky brand that resonates with folks who want something simpler & better for their kids than the tech-infused lives we're currently living (and who have a sense of humor about it).
As we scale to thousands of families, we're ready to bring on someone who will live and breathe our existing users—what they love, what they don't, and what makes them tell friends about Tin Can.
The Role
We're looking for a Growth & Retention Lead to own two of our most critical levers: Retention and K-Factor.
This is a hands-on, high-autonomy role where you'll design and run experiments, talk to customers every week, and ship changes that make Tin Can more lovable and more shareable.
You'll be the leading expert on our users—combining data analysis with real conversations to uncover what drives long-term happiness and where the cracks are. You'll turn those insights into action, whether that's proposing product improvements, rethinking onboarding, or creating referral and sharing programs that make Tin Can spread faster kid-to-kid and parent-to-parent.
This role will be perfect for someone who can move between product, marketing, and operations fluidly—and who thrives on chasing measurable outcomes.
You'll probably love this role if
- You're excited by the idea of experimenting with growth levers inside *and* outside of the traditional tech Product/Marketing toolset. Want to test out whether giving customers giftable friendship bracelets drives kid-to-kid referrals? What about a quarterly magazine? If the business case is there, the world is your oyster.
- You want true ownership and a lot of latitude to make an impact. Once you join, our goal is to unlock you to move the needle.
- You enjoy getting your hands dirty. For the foreseeable future, you'll be an individual contributor; we're not looking to build a growth org. Just like everyone else on the team, you'll be hands on with every aspect of the work, including all the unglamorous stuff.
- You believe in our mission. We're all in love with what we're working on, and you should be too.
Key Responsibilities
- Retention – Become the company's authority on user sentiment and behavior. Run surveys, interviews, and usage analysis to get an early read on churn risks and retention drivers. Develop solutions to any challenges you spot.
- Virality & Referrals – Design and launch programs that increase our K Factor, from incentivized referral programs to organic kid-to-kid sharing mechanics.
- Experimentation – Develop hypotheses, run tests, measure results, and scale what works.
- User Experience Improvements – Partner with product and support to fix pain points and double down on the magic moments users love.
- Cross-functional Influence – Work closely with founders, creative/design, and marketing to translate insights into tangible product changes and campaigns.
- Storytelling – Share findings regularly with the team to keep retention and virality front-and-center in decision-making.
What We're Looking For
- Retention & Growth Mindset. You've owned metrics like churn, LTV, DAU/WAU, or virality before and know how to move them.
- User Research Skills. You're as comfortable running a survey or interview as you are pulling cohort analysis from a spreadsheet.
- Experiment-Driven. You have a strong grasp of testing frameworks and are energized by rapid iteration.
- Creative Problem-Solving. You can design a referral mechanic one day and dig into retention data the next.
- Self-Starter Energy. You're comfortable setting your own agenda, defining your own KPIs, and acting like an owner.
- Startup Adaptability. You thrive in a small team where priorities shift quickly and action is valued over process.
Bonus Points
- Experience with consumer brands, especially hardware or subscription products
- Analytics chops (spreadsheets, SQL, etc.)
Why Join Tin Can?
- Mission with Impact – Help shape a product that's redefining childhood connection in a healthier, more analog way.
- High Autonomy – Yes, we said this earlier too—but that's because it's worth emphasizing! Own two of the most critical levers for Tin Can's success and have the freedom to pursue bold ideas.
- Small but Mighty Team – Work directly with the founders and have your work shape the company's trajectory from here on out.
- Creative Freedom – If you can dream it and it moves the metrics, you can test it.
If you're ready to obsess over our users, make Tin Can more magical, and help it spread like wildfire, reach out with your resume and a short note on why you think you're the person for this role.

Type: Full-time
About Tin Can
At Tin Can, we're giving kids the freedom and social independence we had growing up—without smartphones. Our screen-free phone is a remix of the classic landline, built for today's world: private, safe, and fun. Parents get peace of mind, kids get autonomy.
We've launched in the U.S. and the response has been overwhelming. Every single day we hear from parents around the globe who want Tin Can for their kids. Our vision is bold and urgent: to give kids everywhere the chance to grow up connected, confident, and screen-free.
The Role
We're looking for a Head of International Expansion to lead Tin Can's next chapter: bringing our product to families across the world. This is a highly entrepreneurial, GM-style role. You'll wear many hats—evaluating which markets to enter first, setting up local operations, ensuring compliance, shaping go-to-market strategies, and ultimately building the playbook to scale Tin Can country by country.
You'll be our architect for global growth, working directly with the founding team to decide the right country model, validate assumptions quickly, and translate early wins into repeatable strategies.
A major part of this role will involve compliance. As we expand, you'll be responsible for navigating complex legal and regulatory landscapes. You'll identify compliance requirements in each market, find and work with local legal experts, and ensure that Tin Can can launch in a way that meets all relevant regulations.
If the idea of building Tin Can into a global household name excites you—and you thrive on figuring out messy, high-stakes problems—this is your role.
Key Responsibilities
- Market Prioritization – Research, evaluate, and recommend which country Tin Can should enter first.
- Country Launches – Lead end-to-end setup of new markets, including compliance, legal, fulfillment, distribution, and customer support.
- Compliance & Regulatory Navigation – Identify key regulatory requirements in each market (e.g., telecom/VoIP, consumer safety, data privacy). Partner with legal teams to ensure Tin Can launches in full compliance.
- Growth & Marketing – Develop local go-to-market strategies and creative campaigns that make Tin Can resonate culturally and spread virally.
- Country Model Design – Work with founders to test and refine the right expansion approach (direct-to-consumer, partnerships, distributors, etc.).
- Playbook Creation – Use the first international market as a testing ground to create a repeatable expansion playbook for future countries.
- Cross-functional Leadership – Partner closely with product, ops, and marketing to ensure smooth global operations and a unified customer experience.
- Entrepreneurial Ownership – Operate like a founder in new markets, making the calls needed to succeed.
What We're Looking For
- International Growth Experience – You've led expansion efforts into new countries and understand the complexity of compliance, logistics, and local adaptation.
- GM Mentality – You think holistically about the business—P&L, growth, customer experience—and are comfortable owning results end to end.
- Entrepreneurial Builder – You thrive in ambiguity, roll up your sleeves, and figure things out fast.
- Strategic & Scrappy – Equally capable of running a high-level strategy session and negotiating with a local fulfillment partner.
- Global Mindset – You understand cultural nuance and how to adapt products and marketing to different markets.
- Startup DNA – Comfortable moving fast, wearing multiple hats, and working with a small, mission-driven team.
Bonus Points
- Experience expanding consumer hardware or subscription businesses internationally
- Familiarity with compliance for communications/VoIP products
- Multilingual background or time spent living/working abroad
Why Join Tin Can?
- Global Impact – Help shape a product that could define how kids around the world connect in healthier ways.
- Autonomy & Ownership – This is a greenfield role with massive scope. You'll be building Tin Can's global future from scratch.
- Small Team, Big Vision – Work directly with the founders to shape not just strategy, but culture and brand on an international scale.
- Mission that Matters – Every kid should have the chance to grow up with more connection and less screen time.
If you're ready to take Tin Can global and give kids everywhere the independence they deserve, reach out with your background and why this mission speaks to you.
Controller
Location: Seattle, WA. We're in the office 3 days a week (Tues–Thurs).
As we scale, we're ready to bring on someone who will own our financial operations—keeping the numbers clean, compliant, and ready to guide big decisions.
The Role
We're looking for a Controller to build and oversee Tin Can's financial operations.
This is a hands-on role where you'll manage our books, ensure financial accuracy, support several compliance/G&A efforts, and provide insights that help steer the company.
You'll be the primary owner of Tin Can's accounting, taxes and financial compliance. You'll oversee our external bookkeeping firm, work with tax/accounting professionals, as well as contribute to these workstreams yourself as an individual contributor.
Another part of this role will be designing the systems and policies that let us stay compliant as we grow—whether that's setting up expense management policies, defining internal controls, or creating financial ops playbooks for entering new countries.
And as Tin Can grows—expanding into new markets, securing new forms of financing, and scaling the team rapidly—you'll get to grow with us, taking on new challenges and shaping the financial backbone of the company.
You'll probably love this role if
- You like being the "financial adult in the room." You get satisfaction from clean books, compliant filings, and numbers that leadership can trust.
- You want ownership and autonomy. This is Tin Can's first in-house finance hire. You'll own not just the deliverables you produce, but the whole systems and policies that we'll rely on to keep us on-track as we scale rapidly.
- You know how to be scrappy. You can balance the rigor of compliance and accurate reporting with the speed and experimentation of a fast-growing startup.
- You enjoy getting your hands dirty. You'll be an individual contributor—closing the books, running reports, and handling compliance filings directly.
- You believe in our mission. We're all in love with what we're working on, and you should be too.
Key Responsibilities
- Accounting Operations – Own accounts payable/receivable, payroll, general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end close, leveraging support from an external firm.
- Financial Reporting – Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; ensure compliance with GAAP.
- Budgeting & Forecasting – Partner with founders to build budgets, track performance, and provide variance analysis.
- Cash Management – Monitor cash flow, manage banking relationships, and oversee credit/treasury functions.
- Compliance & Controls – Ensure Tin Can stays fully buttoned up on requirements such as state taxes, sales taxes, unemployment insurance, business insurance, 409A valuations, and other filings.
- System & Policy Design – Build scalable systems for expense management, internal controls, and financial compliance processes that will keep Tin Can disciplined as we scale.
- Future Growth – As Tin Can scales, lead finance in new challenges—supporting international expansion, working capital financing, and the systems that enable a rapidly growing team and customer base.
What We're Looking For
- Accounting Expertise. You're fluent in GAAP, have run monthly closes, and know how to prepare financial statements.
- Operational Rigor. You can design and enforce systems that scale without slowing the business down.
- Scrappy & Pragmatic. You know when "good enough" is the right answer and when the stakes demand rigor.
- Analytical Mindset. You know how to turn financial data into insights that guide decisions.
- Self-Starter Energy. You can define your own priorities and build processes from scratch.
- Startup Adaptability. You thrive in a small team where things move fast and evolve constantly.
Bonus Points
- Experience at a high-growth startup or consumer products company
- Familiarity with fundraising, 409A valuations, and investor reporting
- CPA or equivalent certification
Why Join Tin Can?
- Mission with Impact – Help build a company that's redefining childhood connection in a healthier, more analog way.
- High Autonomy – You'll be Tin Can's finance foundation, with real ownership and authority.
- Small but Mighty Team – Work directly with the founders and shape the company's trajectory from here on out.
- Career Growth – As Tin Can expands internationally, secures new financing, and scales rapidly, your role and scope will grow right alongside the company.
If you're ready to build Tin Can's financial backbone and help guide its next stage of growth, reach out with your resume and a short note on why you're the right fit for this role.
